Strict laws govern the cinematic universe of Peter Greenaway (Prospero's Books, 1991), and none more pervasively than the law of entropy. Everything animal, vegetable or mineral in A Zed and Two Noughts, not to mention everything human or social, is inexorably running down, decaying, dying. This perverse, obsessively systematic, often inscrutable tale of Siamese twins is perhaps Greenaway's most purely cerebral film – a game whose rules are arcane, and underwritten by a facile nihilism.
