In the wake of Excalibur (1981), Star Wars (1977) and Highlander (1986), it is customary for contemporary action-adventure epics to plunge directly into a patchwork of classic myths, camp theatrics, grand orchestral music and Spielbergian special effects with scarcely a second for expository introduction or dramatic build-up. Masters of the Universe (based on the cartoon for children) plays true to the form, but actually manages to maintain its initial dizzy momentum and playful inventiveness. Dolph Lundgren as He-Man gives an amusingly stolid, Schwarzenegger-like performance. © Adrian Martin December 1992 |
