Death Ring is a B movie curiosity. Shamelessly lifting an idea from the classic The Most Dangerous Game (1932), this film deposits several brothers of action stars – Mike (not Chuck) Norris and Don (not Patrick) Swayze – onto an island where they must fight for their lives against an evil, twisted millionaire (Billy Drago). Action movies are notable these days for their often colourful range of outrageous racial and sexual stereotypes. Here, the bunch of idle rich baddies who kill for pleasure have character names like Dr Chan and Apache. Meanwhile, an Oriental, lesbian dominatrix hisses at the heroes: "You Americans were always too weak with women!" She is escorted by two pearly white, supermodel assistants named Bambi and Thumper. © Adrian Martin August 1993 |
