A Banana Tree is No Coincidence

(Luiza Gonçalves, Spain, 2021)

Luiza Gonçalves from Argentina, a self-proclaimed touristic visitor in Donostía-San Sebastián, sets out to investigate its booming industry of fertility clinics. But she finds herself distracted by something odd: the equally fertile presence of banana trees.

What is the geopolitical, possibly colonial history that brought the trees here, and how are they maintained today? Phone calls to not-very-helpful local authorities provide a droll soundtrack.

The 16-minute film, with its grainy black and white photography, reflects the influence of the exploratory, eclectic pedagogy Gonçalves experienced at the Elías Querejeta Zine Eskola in this region of Spain.
