André Téchiné's Alice and Martin reaches us in a form reportedly not to the director's liking. His original plan was to make (as he has often done) an interlocking mosaic of different destinies linked across the years by love, hate and family ties. The released version concentrates more on the couple at its centre, played exquisitely by Juliette Binoche and Alexis Loret. It is not the equal of Téchiné's masterpiece Wild Reeds (1994), but it is still a moving and beguiling portrait of how people cope with crippling life traumas.
