The films of writer-director Paul Bartel (Eating Raoul [1982], Scenes from the Class Struggle in Beverly Hills [1989]) are, as they say, an acquired taste. But a taste definitely worth acquiring. Resolutely cartoonish, supremely camp, witheringly parodic, Bartel's vision is truly one that holds nothing sacred. This comedy about a National Enquirer-style tabloid, starring Nancy Allen, is neither his blackest nor his funniest work, but it is at least pleasingly corny and tasteless.
