Life in a Czech village is observed with delicate, wry humour in this light satire of socialist bureaucracy and its impact on ordinary people. Director Jirí Menzel, famous for this work in the '60s, crafts a style of comedy which delights in characters who are slow, bumbling, peeved and consumed by the minor distractions of the everyday. There are no great passions or revolutionary murmurings here. Watch out especially for the hilarious snippets of State-approved TV and cinema.
