The In-Laws

(Arthur Hiller, USA, 1979)

Writer-director Andrew Bergman (The Freshman [1990], Honeymoon in Vegas [1992]) perfected his unique, endearing comic vision when he scripted this splendid vehicle for Alan Arkin and Peter Falk.

The mundane little details that make up the life of a middle-class dentist (Arkin) and his family become the stuff of comedy when incongruously mixed into the tall tale of a mysterious "international operator" (Falk) and his frenetic itinerary.

This deserves to be regarded as a '70s classic – while its remake deserves to be forgotten.
