Honey, I Blew up the Kid

(Randal Kleiser, USA, 1992)

The credits of Honey, I Blew Up the Kid include many intriguing production and scriptwriting names hitherto associated with the exploitation end of the horror, sci-fi and fantasy genres – including Deborah Brock (Slumber Party Massacre II, 1987), Thom Eberhardt (Night of the Comet, 1984), Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator, 1985) and Brian Yuzna (Society, 1989).

So, even though it's clearly a Disney movie for kids, directed tastefully by Randal Kleiser (The Blue Lagoon, 1980), there's still something reckless, silly and surreal hidden in the premise of this quite diverting yarn.

In this sequel to Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989), Rick Moranis turns his hi-tech ray gun on his two year old son Adam, who in stages grows to be as big as Godzilla. A rather considerate Godzilla, mind you – even though he rampages through the tack and tinsel of Las Vegas, big Adam manages to hurt no one and destroy nothing.

The soft touch of Disney is at work here, but not enough to spoil the clever plot set-ups and ironic one-liners.
