Shelley Long, who was so wonderful in the television series Cheers, has had trouble transferring her nervy comic persona to the big screen. This limp movie – midway between a modern television sitcom and a Judy Holliday movie of the '50s – kills off "ordinary Mom" Shelley early on, so that she can be brought back to haunt her family, and find new love with dishy doctor Gabriel Byrne. It's a long way down from Perry's finest moment as a director, Mommie Dearest (1981). Expect no more than a few funny one-liners about fashions, television soaps and New Age mystics. © Adrian Martin December 1992 |
