Hello Again

(Frank Perry, USA, 1987)

Shelley Long, who was so wonderful in the television series Cheers, has had trouble transferring her nervy comic persona to the big screen.

This limp movie – midway between a modern television sitcom and a Judy Holliday movie of the '50s – kills off "ordinary Mom" Shelley early on, so that she can be brought back to haunt her family, and find new love with dishy doctor Gabriel Byrne.

It's a long way down from Perry's finest moment as a director, Mommie Dearest (1981).

Expect no more than a few funny one-liners about fashions, television soaps and New Age mystics.
