Falling
In Love

Director Arthur Penn (Bonnie and Clyde, 1967) turned down this quiet, modern romance about two workaday suburbanites (played by Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro) and their nervous progression towards a relationship. This was Penn's reasoning: "There was no way the story could progress if the people were of the same social order. They are two people living in the suburbs and they are essentially the same person. It's really a story about someone falling in love with themselves". Notwithstanding Penn's astute criticism, this is an affecting, pre-thirtysomething drama of lower middle-class mores, economically and inventively directed by the talented Ulu Grosbard.
